For 26 years, I have had a pen pal. My Uni film professor and I have been writing post cards instead of emails and telephone calls. We have a lot in common: we both live on islands, we both miss La Jolla, California, and we both love rating and ranking the best tacos and pho.

Our friendship and correspondence have transcended my moving to multiple countries and thousands of miles. What I’ve noticed though, is that through it all, we both have these wonderful cards, a testament to the enduring power of friendship, something that can’t really be captured in an email or social media post. (For the record, I’ve saved every card from my pen pal. 25+ years of postcards is a lot of postcards!)

At the heart of this wonderful ritual is the simple, profound act of writing. In a world that is always changing, taking the time to put pen to paper is a deeply human gesture. It takes intention. It is an act of love and friendship.

Hand painted stationery as an act of love

I believe that writing on beautiful stationery, and in my case - hand painted stationery - transforms a message into a keepsake. It is a tangible expression of care and connection. It brings us closer to the people we cherish.

I know that Valentine’s Day is coming up and I’ve never been one to buy gifts or expect to receive them because someone arbitrarily said so! It’s also ‘Send a Card to a Friend Day’ on 7 February.

I say don’t wait to tell someone you love them. Tell them every day.

And in my case, send a card (send art) anytime, send one all the time. Share art and love because they are beautiful and because you love the people around you.
